Sherman’s Got Great Doings
This Memorial Day Weekend
MAY 22-24th

The quiet little hamlet of Sherman, CT, will be humming with activity this Memorial Day weekend. There is something for everyone, so mark your calendars; you won’t want to miss out.

Women can get a jumpstart on the weekend’s entertainment and shopping at the Women’s Soirée at the Sherman Library on Friday, May 22, 7 – 9PM. There will be champagne, hors d’oeuvres, raffles, door prizes, and a silent auction of new and like-new handbags and scarves, all donated to support the library. It’s wonderful fun so plan to come and invite your friends. It’s $25, tickets available at the library. RSVP by Tuesday, May 22 to SL@biblio.org or call 860-354-2455. The Library is at 1 Sherman Center.

Be sure to get a good night’s sleep, though, because THREE BIG SALES START SATURDAY!

The annual, fundraising Barn Sale at the Sherman Historical Society, Saturday, May 23, 9AM – 4PM, and Sunday, May 24, 9AM -12PM. The barn and tents will be packed full of awesome bargains and fantastic finds and there’ll be morning baked goods and lunchtime food and refreshments. The Old Store gift shop, which always has wonderful items in stock, will be open as well. The Historical Society is located at 10 Route 37 Center, with convenient parking nearby.
While you’re in the Center, check out the Sherman Library Book Sale, Saturday, 9AM – 4PM, and Sunday, 9AM – 12PM. There will be thousands of books, organized for easy browsing, plus rare books, audio books and DVDs.

But save your reading for the beach because, just a hop/skip from the Center, is the Jewish Community Center Tag Sale and Jamboree! Saturday hours are 10AM to 7PM. Come for the sale, stay for hot dogs and hamburgers in the late afternoon/evening, and then enjoy the Jamboree, which will start at 7:30PM. If you want to shop more, the tag sale continues on Sunday, from 10AM – 1PM. The JCC is located at 9 Route 39 South.

But wait, there’s even something new this year you’ll want to add to your list: Happy Acres Farm Memorial Day Picnic, Saturday, 1:30PM – 5PM. Bring your own beverages and snacks and Happy Acres will provide music, burgers, and a beautiful lawn on which to unwind. For those interested, a formal farm tour will be given at 2:15PM. It’s sure to be an afternoon that’s welcoming, relaxing, and a great opportunity to socialize with the farm crew. Happy Acres is north of town at 2 Taber Road, off Route 39 North.

All of the monies raised from these several events goes to support these organizations and their many wonderful programs for- and services to- the community. While you hunt for bargains and treasures, you’ll feel good knowing that every penny you spend will, in turn, be well spent.

And let us never forget. When all that shopping and picnicking an entertainment winds down, we invite you to join us for the Annual Memorial Day Parade on Sunday at 1PM. It’s always a special event in Sherman and reminds us all that we enjoy our freedom because of those who fought and sacrificed all for it.
