Station Inn Pawling Celebrates Grand Opening; Invites Community to Open House November 4

October 16, 2018

Pawling, NY — Station Inn Pawling, a boutique hotel with 10 luxuriously appointed guest rooms, celebrated its grand opening last month. Situated in a fully renovated Victorian house in downtown Pawling, Station Inn Pawling combines modern design with a charming, small-town feel. The inn is just steps away from the Pawling Metro-North train station and village shops. All are welcome to attend an open house on November 4 from 2 – 6 pm at Station Inn Pawling, 7 Memorial Avenue.

“Pawling is increasingly a tourist destination for visitors from New York City and beyond,” said David Daniels, one of the founders of Station Inn Pawling along with his wife, Susan Daniels, and local developer Bill McGuiness. “As a lifelong Pawling resident, I couldn’t be more excited to provide a home base for others to experience the charm of our small town.”

Station Inn Pawling also pays homage to centuries of family and town history for Daniels, whose paternal great-great-great grandfather was among the first railroad station agents in Pawling and started a restaurant at the Pawling train station in 1850. The Station Restaurant went on to serve Pawling residents and notable travelers including General Ulysses S. Grant and Commodore Vanderbilt, who “would stuff his large coat pockets with doughnuts and rolls, pay his bill, and hurry out to re-board his train,” writes Louis Grogan in The Coming of the New York and Harlem Railroad.

The Station Restaurant provided “fast food” in an era before McDonald’s and Burger King: “Several Harlem trains with arrival times at Pawling coinciding with normal meal time had scheduled-stops for meals at the Station Restaurant; the length of the stop varied from a rapid five minutes to a luxurious stay of twelve minutes,” according to Grogan. The Station Restaurant continued into the middle of the 20th century and was later owned by Daniels’ maternal grandfather.

“I grew up hearing stories about the Station Restaurant,” says Daniels. “Highway culture ultimately led to a decline in visitors and the restaurant shut down soon after I was born. Today we’re seeing a resurgence in tourism and appreciation for villages like ours — with commerce based around the railroad and a close-knit community that is difficult if not impossible to replicate in a larger setting.”

Station Inn Pawling offers visitors close proximity to numerous local attractions including live music venue Daryl’s House, Trinity-Pawling School, multiple Appalachian trailheads, Lakeside Park, and historic sites such as Akin Hall Library & Museum, The Kane House, and Oblong Friends Meeting House.

While the Station Inn Pawling is rooted in a rich local history, its design aesthetic is decidedly modern. “From the outside, Station Inn Pawling may look like a traditional Victorian home,” said co-founder McGuinness. “But the interior of the building has been stripped down and completely renovated — we’ve transformed the layout to accommodate 10 guest rooms and bathrooms and added details like larger windows, patios, individually controlled HVAC systems, and more. The brand-new rooms feature crisp, luxurious design more reminiscent of an urban boutique hotel than a traditional small-town bed and breakfast.”
