Obituary for Barbara Carter Wrobel
Barbara was born on April 3, 1929, in Bronxville, NY, and spent her childhood in Scarsdale NY. Her parents were late Judge Charles M. Carter from Washington DC, and Madeline Weber Carter from White Plains. Her family moved from Scarsdale, NY, to Amenia in 1944. She graduated from Amenia High School in 1946 and Cazenovia Junior College in 1948.
Barbara worked for several years as a medical lab technician and then as a dental assistant in Bronxville. She married Ben Wrobel of Norwich, CT in 1953. Her husband’s aviation career enabled them to live in several areas including Nashville, TN and Weston, CT, before eventually retiring in 1984 to her Amenia family home that was built circa 1735. Barbara and Ben traveled across the globe on many exotic vacations.
Barbara is survived by her daughter Amy, son-in-law William and her grandson, Carter Liam Trabakino, all from Stamford, CT. She is also survived by 8 nieces and nephews, and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband Ben, who died on November 24, 2007, and her parents, Barbara was also predeceased by two sisters, Betty Carter Stevens and Judy Carter Redfern.
Barbara was known to many as a gracious lady in an era where there are not many of them left. She was very proud of Amenia and was a member of the Amenia Historical Society and the Indian Rock Schoolhouse Association where she was the 2011 Volunteer of the Year. She was also a member of the Owl’s Head Transportation Museum of Maine where she donated an antique automobile to the museum’s collection.
Barbara was a gardener extraordinaire and could be found most days toiling in the various gardens in her property on Old North Road. She enjoyed all things in nature, was an avid bird watcher and was an accomplished skier who enjoyed skiing most in Vail, CO.
Barbara will be laid to rest on September 1, 2018, at the Amenia Island Cemetery with her husband Ben and not far from her parents. Per her wishes, there will be no calling hours. Graveside services and burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Indian Rock Schoolhouse Association, PO Box 72, Amenia, NY 12501.
