Obituary, James F. Shequine

 

Millbrook – James F. Shequine, 89, of Millbrook, NY, died on July 11, 2018, at the Thompson House of Northern Dutchess Hospital. A Millbrook resident for over 40 years, Mr. Shequine was born on December 2, 1928 to Marguerite Cusick Shequine and Earl R. Shequine, in Lynn, MA.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth K. (Betsy) Shequine, also of Millbrook, and his son, Frederick, of Rhinebeck.

Mr. Shequine studied at Cornell University, before joining the United States Navy, and was a graduate of New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Mr. Shequine, who had a long and distinguished career in Small Metal Manufacturing, came to Poughkeepsie as Director of Operations and later, as Executive Vice-President of Schatz Federal Bearings Co. Inc. between the years from 1971 and 1984. Following that, as a General Management consultant, he became a recognized expert in operations, pricing and general management.

Mr. Shequine began his career at Alcoa Corporation, in Edgewater, NJ, as a staff industrial engineer.

He later joined The Stanley Works in New Britain, CT as a Methods Engineer. He was later appointed Chief Industrial Engineer responsible for industrial and manufacturing engineering for five divisions at the home location. While at Stanley, he conducted major studies which resulted in the widespread adoption of industrial engineering techniques in the building industry. For his innovative leadership in developing industrial engineering for the home building industry, in 1962, Time, Inc., through the editors of House & Home magazine, presented Mr. Shequine with its Performance Award as one of the nation’s ten outstanding housing professionals.

His projects while at The Stanley Works in Time Study and Industrial Engineering brought about the Stanley Tape Measure that every carpenter uses today.

Mr. Shequine served as a Director of the A.C. Dutton Lumber Company, in Poughkeepsie, and was a long-time member of the Planning Board of the Town of Washington. He was also active in several Not-for Profit organizations, such as the American Red Cross.

He was a member of the Millbrook Golf and Tennis Club and Tamarack Preserve, Ltd.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Peter’s Lithgow Episcopal church on Deep Hollow Road in Millbrook, on Saturday, July 21, at 11:00 AM.
