For the week of July 9

Note: starting with the July 16 edition of the Aging News due out on the 13th, the Aging News will arrive in your email via the “Dutchess Delivery” system that Dutchess County departments use to communicate with the public. The Aging News will stay the same, right down to the bad jokes at the end of each issue. THE SENIOR PROM – SOONER THAN YOU THINK

October may seem a long way away here in mid-July, but not to those of you who’ve enjoyed the Office for the Aging Senior Prom over the years. For people who’ve been to the Senior Prom before, preparations for the following year’s prom often start when the previous one ends.

This year’s prom takes place on Monday, October 15, from 12 noon until 4 p.m., at Villa Borghese in the Town of Wappinger (70 Widmer Rd.).

For those of you who are new to a Senior Prom experience, think of it as a “do over” if your high school prom wasn’t what you hoped it would be. Each year we choose a new theme for the prom, and this year’s theme is “The Big Game.”

Should you choose to dress in a costume, pick something that would be suitable if you were either attending a sporting event, or playing in a sporting event – the big game, in other words.

Choose any sport you’d like, but keep in mind that ice skates, football cleats, baseball spikes and horses are not allowed on the dance floor.

Dressing up to match the theme is strictly optional – but it sure is fun, and it puts you in the running to be the 2018 “Duke and Duchess” of the prom.

The prom begins with a buffet lunch. Once again, the full Bob Martinson Band will help fill the dance floor playing your favorites from the ‘40s onward; there’ll be plenty of prizes; and a 50-50 raffle will benefit the Office for the Aging.

Reserved admission will be the same price as last year – $20 per person ($200 for a table of 10) until September 14 or when the event sells out, whichever comes first. After that date, the price increases to $30 per person. Reservation forms are available on request from the Office for the Aging, and will be printed in the next edition of the OFA “Spotlight on Seniors” newsletter, which is published in late summer.

Event sponsorships are sold out, but local businesses interested in providing prizes for prom guests in exchange for publicity at the venue and on the prom program can email OFA Outreach Coordinator Brian Jones at bjones@dutchessny.gov, or call (845) 486-2555.

Many thanks to our sponsors: The Pines at Poughkeepsie, Northwestern Mutual, EverCare At Home, Wingate Healthcare, and Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

SPEAKERS FOR THE SUMMER

Many members of your community may not be aware of all the OFA has to offer seniors, their families, and their caregivers. A remedy to that gap in information is easy to find. If your senior group, retirees’ group, civic organization or house of worship is looking for speakers to complete your schedule for the summer and beyond, the Office for the Aging can bring you in-person expertise on issues including housing, nutrition, OFA services, scam prevention, successful aging, and much more, contact us using the information below.

Golden Living is prepared by the Dutchess County Office for the Aging, 27 High Street, Poughkeepsie, New York 12601, telephone (845) 486-2555, email:ofa@dutchessny.gov website: www.dutchessny.gov/aging

PROM ENTRY FORM NOW AVAILABLE AT OFA WEBSITE

You’ve been asking us since the 2017 OFA Senior Prom about the 2018 prom, and when can you sign up.

Head over to www.dutchessny.gov/aging, and watch the continuously changing “slider” section in the middle of the page. A link to a printable prom entry form will come up – click on it, print it, fill it out, enclose the correct payment, and get it back to us. It’s that easy.

The prom is taking place on Monday, October 15, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at Villa Borghese, 70 Widmer Rd in Wappinger.
