Early Morning Bird Walks with Miley Bull
Join Miley Bull, senior director of science and conservation for The Connecticut Audubon Society for early morning bird walks at Deer Pond Farm in Sherman, CT. With over 835 acres, offering diverse habitats, supporting over 100 species of birds, we’ll be looking and listening for a wide variety of birds, while collecting data for The Connecticut Bird Atlas project. All levels of birders are welcome.

Advanced Volunteer Training: Protect Our Pollinator Friday, June 8 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Current Connecticut Audubon Society volunteers and Master Naturalists are invited to this training by Mary Wilson and Holly Kocet, founders of local non-profit organization Protect Our Pollinators. We will learn about our pollinators-who they are, what they need and how they help us. The use of pesticides and alternatives will be presented as well.
Fern Walk Wednesday, June 13 10 a.m.
Enjoy a shady stroll along the trails of Deer Pond Farm and discover the various ferns common to Connecticut. Connecticut Audubon Society Master Naturalist volunteers, Diane Nizlek and Jim Cortina will share the basics of identification and reproduction as well as a few fun facts on some of the oldest plants on our planet and their connection to our local birds.
Summer Bird Count Saturday, June 16 8 a.m
Join Jim Arrigoni, conservation biologist for The Connecticut Audubon Society for this annual survey of breeding bird populations and locations. Last year we counted 35 species, including American Redstart, Barred Owl, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Ovenbird, and Willow Flycatcher.
Birds & Pollinators: What’s the Connection? Saturday, June 16 11 a.m
Join us as we explore phase one of the newly planted pollinator garden at Deer Pond Farm in Sherman, CT. Learn about each plant that was selected and why. Time permitting we’ll explore some nearby trails to see some of these same plants in their natural habitats.
Invasive Plant Walk Thursday, June 21 4 p.m.
Join Karen Cowperthwaite, licensed landscape architect at Deer Pond Farm for a guided walk along trails to learn about the non-native plant species. We will examine why certain plants are labeled invasive, the impact they have on our native plant species and the harm that is caused to our bird and other wildlife habitats. Information regarding managing and controlling invasive plants will also be presented.
For all programs: Allow for an average of two hours. Dress for walks that cover approximately 1.5 miles along moderately hilly terrain and the weather. Inclement weather cancels. Bring binoculars, camera and a sense of adventure. Unless otherwise stated: free for members and $5.00 non-members.
