Obituary, John H. Gileno

 

 

John H. Gileno, 84, of Sherman, Connecticut, passed away on June 2. He was born in Tarrytown, New York, on Sept. 17, 1933, to Horace and Clara (Johnson) Gileno. He was a nearly 50-year resident of Sherman, Connecticut. A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the United States Army following graduation from North Tarrytown High School. He attended Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (now Tennessee Technological University) before enrolling at Arizona State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in aeronautics in 1964. He married Frances Bible in 1965 in Phoenix, Arizona, the same year he began a 27-year career as a pilot for TWA. Based out of New York, he began flying Constellations, and then flew Boeing 727s and 747s, retiring as a captain in 1992. He was a licensed A&P ­­­­mechanic and a flight instructor. His passion for aviation led him to teach his wife and both of his children to fly the 1946 Luscombe (taildragger) that he owned and maintained since 1959. With his family outgrowing the two-seater, he added a 1956 Cessna 170B in 1974. They flew it on many family fishing and camping trips to wilderness areas in Idaho and Montana and as far as Alaska, with westward stops including the EAA Convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was a member of the Airline Pilots Association and Cessna 170 Association.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Fran, his son Glenn Gileno (Pamela) of Palmer, Alaska; daughter Jean Lloyd (Chris) of Carmel, Indiana; grandchildren Garret (Tawny), Emma and Derek Gileno, Joel and Cameron Lloyd; great-granddaughter Eleanor Gileno; nephew Gary McBride (Nancy); two great-nephews, two great-nieces and four great-great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Barbara McBride (Bill) and his niece Laurie McBride.

Calling Hours will be held at  58 Bridge St. New Milford, CT on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, from 5:00-8: 00 pm. A Funeral Service will be at 10:30 am Thursday, June 7, 2018, at the Old Dutch Church in Sleepy Hollow, NY, 540 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, NY. Burial will follow in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in NY.
