TO MARKET, TO MARKET

For local residents, “eat your vegetables” isn’t an admonishment – it something to look forward to, thanks to the great variety of delicious produce grown in Dutchess County. A great way to get more vegetables and fruits into your diet is as simple as a trip to your local farmers market. There’s a farmers market in every corner of the county and lots of places in between, and many of them will accept SNAP (formerly called “food stamps”) as full payment.

Farmers markets also help ensure your dollar stays local and supports local farmers and, in turn, the local economy. You can find a countywide listing of farmers markets online at www.dutchesstourism.com. Click on “Places To Eat,” and on the drop down menu, you’ll find the link to the farmers markets in Dutchess County that includes locations, days, times and other helpful information.

FARMERS MARKET COUPONS FOR LOW-INCOME SENIORS

The New York State Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) provides coupons for low-income seniors. These coupons can be exchanged for locally grown fruit and vegetables at participating farmers markets in Dutchess County and elsewhere in New York State. Contact the Office for the Aging at (845) 486-2555 for eligibility and distribution information. Seniors with residences in low-income senior housing in Dutchess County may be able to find out more from their residence administrator.

The coupons are valid through the 2018 growing season, until November 30th or a participating  market closes for the winter, whichever comes first. Treat coupons like cash; they cannot be replaced if lost or stolen. Look for vendors that display the sign, “We Gladly Accept NYS FMNP Checks.”

WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY 2018 (Fri 6/15)

This annual event had been held in Poughkeepsie for many years, but it has drawn attention from around the Hudson Valley. Organizers say a larger venue was needed to host this year’s event – therefore, it’s been scheduled for Friday, June 15, at the Aquinas Theatre at Mount Saint Mary College in the City of Newburgh (330 Powell Ave.). According to organizers, in future years, the event will be held in rotating locations including Dutchess County, and the event remains open to all guests from any county who register in advance while there’s space.

Dutchess County will be represented at the conference by Patricia Sheldon, Director of Adult Protective Services. Additionally, Dutchess County Executive Marcus J. Molinaro will join Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus at the conference for opening remarks. The event is presented by EverCare with cooperation from St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital and Mount Saint Mary College.

Space will be limited, so register by emailing weaad2018@evercare.org, or by calling the Orange County Office for the Aging at (845) 615-3700.

Check the OFA calendar of events in this newsletter for advance presentations leading up to the WEEAD event at several of our Senior Friendship Centers.
