For the week of May 21

Note: we’re sending the Aging News emails out on Fridays now, to take advantage of the chance to publicize weekend senior-friendly events that we might not learn about until there’s less than a week to go before they happen. Golden Living . . . News for Seniors, Their Families and Caregivers

Todd N. Tancredi, Director

Dutchess County Office for the Aging

The Office for the Aging’s 2018 Senior Picnic Program launches May 30 at Thomas Boyce Park in Wingdale, for residents of the towns of Amenia, Dover, Pawling and Union Vale.

Dutchess County residents age 60 and over are invited to socialize with their friends and neighbors at the event designated for their hometown, enjoy a nutritious meal, and learn more about the programs and services offered by the Office for the Aging.  Other county departments, as well as businesses and non-profit organizations whose services may be of interest to seniors, will also be on hand.  All picnics begin at noon. Seating at picnics is limited; therefore, reservations and proof of residency are required.    Call (866) 486-2555 to make a reservation.  The May 30 picnic in Wingdale is already at maximum capacity and no more reservations are being accepted. There is a $4 charge for anyone 59 or younger or non-resident guests.  A senior may reserve a seat for one non-resident guest.

Attendees are invited to bring their unused and/or expired medications to the senior picnic to be disposed of in convenient drop boxes.  In addition to prescription medications, residents can also dispose of ointments, inhalers and over-the-counter medications.  Medications should be brought in their original packaging inside sealable plastic bags.

Needles, syringes and lancets, or “sharps” of any kind, will not be accepted. Contact the Office for the Aging to find out more about safe sharps-disposal options.

Special thanks to Dutchess County Stop DWI, the Dutchess County Traffic Safety Board and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office for arranging for this special service.

For those unable to attend a picnic, medication disposal sites, open 24 hours a day, are available at these locations:

Additionally, a disposal site at the Red Hook Police Department, 7467 South Broadway, is available daily between 8 AM and midnight. In Millerton, village police are available to accept medications from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, on Saturdays from noon to midnight, and on Sundays from 4 p.m. to midnight. In Pawling, call (845) 486-3800 for drug drop-off assistance at the sheriff’s office substation, 9 Memorial Ave.

Proper disposal of unused medications is an important step to making sure these substances do not get into groundwater, and it also keeps drugs out of the hands of those who could abuse them.

The Senior Picnic Program is made possible through private/public partnerships with support from many local municipalities and businesses.  Special thanks to our platinum level sponsors for 2017: Wingate Healthcare, Medicare Resource Group, Northwestern Mutual, The Pines at Poughkeepsie, and EverCare At Home.  Sponsorships for the picnics are still available. Volunteers of all ages are needed at many picnics to help with set-up, bringing meals to attendees with mobility issues, and cleanup.  Call the Office for the Aging at (845) 486-2555 for more information, or email bjones@dutchessny.gov.

PICNIC VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE

We’re closing in on the beginning of Senior Picnic season, and can always use volunteer help with various aspects of each picnic, including helping guide guests to parking spots, setting up tables and chairs, bringing food and drinks to guests, and breaking down tables and chairs after the picnic concludes. There are a total of 12 picnics between late May and late August, and you can volunteer for one, all 12, or any number in between. All picnics take place on Wednesdays, and the schedule is available atwww.dutchessny.gov/SeniorPicnic.

The picnics are an excellent opportunity not only for seniors to volunteer, but for young people seeking to meet their school and/or house of worship’s community service requirements. For volunteers under age 18, a parent/guardian signature will be required.

For information on all volunteering opportunities, get in touch with outreach coordinator Brian Jones at bjones@dutchessny.gov or (845) 486-2555.

WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY 2018 (Fri 6/15)

This annual event had been held in Poughkeepsie for many years, but it has drawn attention from around the Hudson Valley. Organizers say a larger venue was needed to host this year’s event – therefore, it’s been scheduled for Friday, June 15, at the Aquinas Theatre at Mount Saint Mary College in the City of Newburgh (330 Powell Ave.). According to organizers, in future years, the event will be held in rotating locations including Dutchess County, and the event remains open to all guests from any county who register in advance while there’s space.

Dutchess County will be represented at the conference by Patricia Sheldon, Director of Adult Protective Services. Additionally, Dutchess County Executive Marcus J. Molinaro will join Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus at the conference for opening remarks. The event is presented by EverCare with cooperation from St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital and Mount Saint Mary College.

Space will be limited, so register by emailing weaad2018@evercare.org, or by calling the Orange County Office for the Aging at (845) 615-3700.

Check the OFA calendar of events in this newsletter for advance presentations leading up to the WEEAD event at several of our Senior Friendship Centers.
