Obituary, Peter “Pierin” Zanolin

Peter “Pierin” Zanolin, 79, of Millbrook, NY passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 30, 2018.

Pietro Zanolin was born on January 16, 1939, in Meduno, Italy to the late Cesare Zanolin and Matilde Giordani. He studied at the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli in Spilimbergo, Italy. He spent his life practicing the art of mosaics, and became an accomplished professional artist, with works displayed in churches and public spaces throughout America, including Grant’s Tomb, Seattle Airport and the New York City Subway system.

Peter emigrated from Italy to America when he was 19 years old, and settled in the Bronx. He obtained a baccalaureate from Baruch College and took up a second profession as an accountant, most recently at Phillips North America in Briarcliff Manor.

Peter met Joan Linane at Cresthaven Ski Club and won her over while driving her home to the Bronx. They married in 1974. They had a son, Peter in 1975 and moved to Millbrook, NY in 1979.

Peter was a true Renaissance man whose interest, knowledge and skill touched many crafts and interests. He built much of his home himself, cultivated his own grapes and made his own wine, and landscaped and propagated an enormous garden and orchard, played clarinet, was an accomplished amateur ski racer and avid hunter, and a dedicated parishioner at St. Joseph’s Church. Most importantly he loved his family more than anything in the world and would be happiest when helping them fix a roof, plant tomatoes, or in any way he could.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; son Peter and daughter in law Elena; he was beloved Nonno to his grandchildren Julia, Hannah and Liam Zanolin; his brother, Domenico and wife Margherita; nieces and nephews, Chiara and Giuliano Zanolin, Marco Lepore and Dennis Lepore, and the Maraldo family and his many other cousins here and in Italy.  He was predeceased by his sister, Vittoria Lepore.

Visitation for Peter will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2018, from 3 pm to 7 pm at 3270 Franklin Ave., Millbrook, NY 12545. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, May 7, 2018, at 11 am from St. Joseph’s Church, 15 North Ave., Millbrook, NY 12545.

Pierin, Nonno, Dad- we miss you so much and though our hearts are broken we are all who we are because you touched our lives. Ciao, until we meet again.
