Obituary, Edward V. Ryan

 

Edward V. Ryan, 87, beloved husband of Kathleen Alicia (nee MacDonald), passed away on April 18, 2018, in Summit, N.J. He died peacefully in the presence of his loving wife and children. Visitation will be at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood, N.J. on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary R.C. Church in Scotch Plains, N.J. Interment will follow at Ocean View Cemetery in Staten Island.

Edward is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathleen Alicia, and eight children: Edward and Marguerite Ryan, Geralyn and Richard Madsen, MaryBeth and Scott Burgess, Jennifer and David Pfuhler, Ken and Virginia Ryan, Kevin and Karen Ryan, Alicia and Jim O’Keefe, and John and Allison Ryan. He was blessed with numerous nieces and nephews, 27 grandchildren, and was adored by them all. Edward was the son of Maurice and Margaret Ryan and brother to the late Maurice Ryan. He was born and raised on Staten Island, N.Y., where he lived most of his life.

He attended Regis H.S., St. Peter’s College, and received his M.B.A. from NYU. As a CPA, he was a partner of the venture capital firm J.H. Whitney & Co. where he worked for over 40 years. A proud U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he attained the rank of 1st lieutenant. Always generous with his time and resources, he was extremely active with the Jesuit Community. He spent many years working in particular with Mount Manresa Retreat House and Nativity Mission among others. He was the first lay recipient of the “Deo Et Patria” award in 2001. Ed enjoyed classical music, was an avid golfer and tennis player.

In his later years, he loved nothing more than spending time with his beloved wife and family at his weekend retreat in Millbrook, N.Y., where he relished his role as patriarch and “Gentleman Farmer.” In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Edward’s memory to St. Ignatius School, Bronx, NY (www.sis-nativity.org).
