City of Poughkeepsie Common Council Unanimously Passes Supporting Resolution

Encouraging the New York State Legislature to Adopt Key Voting Reforms

Tuesday, April 17, 2018, Poughkeepsie, NY

On Monday, April 16, 2018, the City of Poughkeepsie Common Council sent a supporting resolution up to Albany encouraging the State Legislature to pass two importing voting reforms, Early Voting & Automatic Voter Registration, within the fiscal year 2018/2019.

“We’re sending an important message up to Albany with the passage of this resolution,” Says Councilmember Salem “Both of these voting reforms further advance and amplify our democratic system by increasing access and so participation in our election process. The reforms will remove barriers to voting & registration for residents, and so lead toward an increase of voter participation &  more efficient elections. Eligible voters won’t have to worry about registration deadlines, application submissions, or having to update their address information every time they move. We’re streamlining the process and adding eligible voters to the roll.”

37 states already allow for early voting and 11 states, including DC, allow for Automatic Voter Registration.

The resolution, authored and introduced by Council Member Sarah Salem, was carried by the council as a whole.
