DCC, Vassar Model U.N. Team Earns Honors

April 10, 2018 – A joint team of students from Dutchess Community College and Vassar College was honored at the 2018 National Model United Nations simulation held in New York City March 25-30. The Hudson River Group earned three Outstanding Position Papers Awards and an Honorable Mention Award for its overall performance representing Saudi Arabia.

The joint DCC/Vassar team prepares with an academic course that begins in January, with the five-day simulation in the spring serving as the culminating event. DCC students have been participating in the conference for over 50 years. Dr. Matthew Murray, a government instructor at DCC, led this year’s group.

The National Model United Nations program is sponsored by the National Collegiate Conference Association, which is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization that promotes understanding of international issues and the United Nations. More than 5,000 college students from dozens of countries participated.

National Model United Nations programs provide students with a better understanding of the inner working of the United Nations as they build skills in civics, diplomacy and compromise. Students take on different roles and are required to use effective communication skills to debate and then solve problems.
