Senator Murphy Announces More Than $13 Million

In State Funding To Fix Local Roads

Albany, NY – This past winter has been a rough one, with local roads taking such a beating they resemble World War I battlefields. As he worked with his colleagues to pass the 2018-19 budget, Senator Terrence Murphy fulfilled his pledge to keep the streets safe for motorists in the Hudson Valley, securing $13,945,241.63 from the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) to help rid the roads of potholes and other damaged surfaces.

The money is part of the DOT’s Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS), Extreme Winter Recovery (EWR) and Local PAVE-NY 2018-19 budget. Westchester County and its municipalities get $7,317,334.65; Putnam County and its municipalities will receive $2,158,445.37 and Dutchess County and its municipalities will get a total of $4,469,461.61.

“Tourists, commuters, parents and school children travel our roads regularly and expect them to be safe and trouble-free,” said Senator Murphy. “Good roads mean fewer car repairs for commuters, and are important to business activity and the continued growth of all our communities in the Hudson Valley.”

“Senator Murphy has always gone above and beyond what we expect to make sure Yorktown roads get their fair share of funding,” said Dave Paganelli, Highway Supervisor for the Town of Yorktown. “Having safe, well-maintained roads benefits all of our residents. Given the severity of the storms we had this winter, this year’s funds are essential.”

Michael Simone, Superintendent for the Town of Carmel Highway Department stated, “We appreciate Senator Murphy fighting to retain and increase funding in the budget for our roads. The money goes toward drainage and paving, and helps offset the cost of maintaining more than 180 miles of roads.”

“I’m glad to hear we will be receiving funding in this year’s budget for extreme weather,” said Peter Sciliano, Superintendent for the Mt. Pleasant Highway Department. “This year’s winter was particularly harsh and hard on our roads. This funding will allow us to stay on top of needed and scheduled repair work.”
