Morning Migration Walk Tuesday, April 3 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Join us on this walk as we discuss the Eastern Bluebird with Miley Bull, senior director of science and conservation for The Connecticut Audubon Society. We’ll view the recently installed nesting boxes on this morning migration walk at Deer Pond Farm in Sherman, CT.

 

Early Spring Wildflower Hike Tuesday, April 10 2 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. 1.5 – 2.5 mile loop

Enjoy early spring on the trails!  Join Karen Cowperthwaite, landscape architect, for a guided walk at Deer Pond Farm in Sherman and discover native woodland treasures and weird wetland wonders.  We’ll look for trout lilies and marsh marigold, Dutchman’s breeches, pretty purple hepatica, and delicate wood anemones and more.  We’ll enjoy scented spicebush and gain a new appreciation for stinky (yet wonderful!) skunk cabbage as well as sedges and rushes and unfurling ferns.  Not only are these plants real charmers, they are important for early pollinators.

 

Backyard Birding Thursday, April 12 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the Sherman Senior Center

Backyard birding is social and fun for all ages. Join Cathy Hagadorn and Deirdra Wallin as we review the basics of bird ID, how to best attract birds to your feeder. Angela Dimmitt, president of Western Connecticut Bird Club will also join us to share some fun facts about our local birds as well as share updates on the Birds of Sherman list! Additionally, you will learn how to make your yard a birding destination year round. We’ll display a few bird feeders, binoculars and ID books. This is event is open to all at no cost and the Sherman Senior Center provides transportation to senior Sherman residents or disabled. Afternoon Spring Migration Walk Friday, April 13 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Join Miley Bull, senior director of science and conservation for The Connecticut Audubon Society, for an afternoon spring migration walk at Deer Pond Farm in Sherman, CT. With over 835 acres, including ponds and vernal pools, we’ll enjoy the sights and sounds of spring while looking for Red-winged Blackbirds, Eastern Phoebes, American Redstarts and many more! We’ll also take time to discuss Purple Martins and the recently installed nesting gourds.

 

Quaker Pond Bird Walk Thursday, April 19 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

With a variety of habitats supporting over 100 species of birds during the breeding season, Miley Bull, senior director of science and conservation for The Connecticut Audubon Society, will lead this walk at Deer Pond Farm in Sherman, CT to Quaker Pond. We’ll be listening and looking for Tree Swallows, Carolina Wrens, American Goldfinches and many more!

 

Book Club Friday, April 20 7:30 p.m. at the Sherman Library

Join Cathy Hagadorn, director at Deer Pond Farm and volunteer Elissa Johnson, environmental science teacher for our first collaborative book club with the Sherman Library. We’ll be discussing the Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate―Discoveries from a Secret World by Peter Wohlleben (2016, 288 pp.) Peter Wohlleben, a forester presents scientific information throughout and describes how trees communicate and support one another much like a human family. Wohlleben also shares his deep love of woods and forests explaining the amazing processes of life, death, and regeneration he has observed. He speaks to the interconnectedness of nature, recognizing the role and impact of birds in the woods and forest. Morning Bird Walk Wednesday, April 25 9 a.m. (1-1.5 hours) flat loop

With the weather warming up, Miley Bull, senior director of science and conservation for The Connecticut Audubon Society, will lead us on a walk looking for Yellow Warblers, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Pine Warblers and many more! Last year over 20 species of warbler were viewed on just one of our White Oaks here at Deer Pond Farm in Sherman, Connecticut during a morning walk.

 

Arbor Day Tree Walk Saturday, April 28th 10am to 12:00 p.m.

Join Robert Judd, local arborist and Deirdra Wallin, program coordinator at Deer Pond Farm and advanced master gardener, for an enjoyable walk and talk learning how our trees are part of a social network and are influenced by the environment.

This walk is a follow up to the collaborative book discussion on Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate―Discoveries from a Secret World by Peter Wohlleben (2016) between The Connecticut Audubon Society and the Sherman Library.

We’ll explore the concepts of the book while observing the phenological stages of various trees such as our native Amelanchier canadensis (Serviceberry Shadblow), Cornus florida (Dogwood) and our Malus (apple) trees.

 

For all programs: Dress for the weather. Think head, hands and feet! Wool hats, gloves and socks are a really good choice for outdoor fun. Inclement weather cancels. Bring binoculars, camera and a sense of adventure. Unless otherwise stated: free for members and $5.00 non-members.
