SEARCH CONTINUES FOR SENIORS OF THE YEAR

The window of opportunity to nominate someone for the 2018 Dutchess County “Senior Citizen of the Year Award” is closing soon.

Nominations are being accepted through March 31st in the categories of Senior Male, Senior Female, or Senior Citizen Couple of the Year.  The awards are presented at the Celebration of Aging, held Monday, May 21st at Villa Borghese in Wappingers Falls in observance of Older Americans Month.  The nomination form and more information are available by emailingbjones@dutchessny.gov or calling our office at (845) 486-2555. If you’d like to print your own copy, look for it on Page 4 of the Winter 2017-18 “Spotlight on Seniors newsletter,” available in our archives at http://dutchessny.gov/CountyGov/Departments/Aging/Spotlight-on-Seniors-Winter-2017.pdf. You may nominate as many people as you wish, in any or all three categories. Eligible nominees must be over age 60 and live in Dutchess County.

The Celebration of Aging also honors residents of Dutchess County who have achieved outstanding feats of successful aging.  Call or email to let us know of any Dutchess County resident you know who will turn 100 or older any time this year, or celebrate their 70th or greater wedding anniversary during 2018. We would like to invite them to be our guests at the Celebration of Aging.

If you’ve been to a Celebration of Aging, you’ve heard the inspiring stories our “super seniors” have to tell. It’s always a treat to welcome new seniors to the county’s most exclusive club and hear them share their wisdom. We hope to see you at the Celebration of Aging in May.

PAID AND VOLUNTEER DRIVERS NEEDED

The Office for the Aging is looking for experienced paid and volunteer drivers to help deliver hot meals to homebound seniors in all areas of Dutchess County, and to help deliver hot food from the OFA’s central kitchen to its eight Senior Friendship Centers. A commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required for the paid drivers’ positions, with a CDL with passenger endorsement needed for any positions that may involve transporting seniors to and from the Friendship Centers. To apply for both the paid and volunteer positions, contact the Office for the Aging at (845) 486-2555, and an application packet will be mailed to you. Please note: A criminal background check and confidentiality training will be required. The Office for the Aging is an Equal Opportunity Employer.  For more information on this, and other employment opportunities with Dutchess County, visit www.dutchessny.gov/jobs.

All your group needs to provide is a venue that’s wheelchair-accessible and open to the public, with space to set up a projector and screen.  We have our own projector and screen – but if you have those, let us know. This time of year, we recommend you come up with an alternate presentation date you can make available in case of inclement winter weather.

We feature presentations on Successful Aging, Office for the Aging services, Medicare/Medicaid, senior housing, a wide range of topics related to nutrition, and more!

“LIVING WITH BRAIN INJURY” DISCUSSION THIS WEEK IN RHINEBECK (Tue 3/6)

Janet Johnson Schliff was an award-winning special education teacher for 25 years. But, as her abilities began to fade away with no medical explanation, she suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) behaviors that wreaked havoc on her much-loved teaching career.

A massive brain tumor was discovered, and finally, after brain surgery, the odd behaviors it caused that had ruled her life for years were gone, only to be replaced by a different set of life-long challenges due to her injured brain. Meet Janet and hear her difficult but inspiring stories at the Starr Library in Rhinebeck (68 W Market St., 845-876-4030www.starrlibrary.org) on Tuesday, March 6 at 7 p.m. Register to attend the event at this link: http://starrlibrary.evanced.info/signup/EventDetails?EventId=6789&backTo=Calendar&startDate=2018/03/01

COMMUNITY HEROES PROJECT AT DUTCHESS COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN MARCH

If you, a family member or neighbor is a veteran or a service member, there’s an opportunity for them to use their unique leadership skills to help the community, coming up later this month at Dutchess Community College (53 Pendell Rd., Poughkeepsiewww.sunydutchess.org).

The Community Heroes Project serves as a bridge to help veterans and military families reintegrate into their local community through civic engagement. We will work as a group to develop a local service project to improve the community in which we live in, while creating a supportive network for the families.

All participants will earn a Volunteer Leader Certification and will be equipped with the skills they need to organize their own projects in the future.  Training sessions are taking place on three consecutive Saturdays later this month: March 17, 24 and 31, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the college’s Falcon Hall.
