School Bus Monitor Arrested After Striking and Threatening a Middle School Student

Putnam County Sheriff Robert L. Langley, Jr. reports the arrest of a school bus monitor, after the monitor allegedly struck and threatened a Putnam Valley Middle School student, while on a school bus.

Joseph Masi, aged 65, who resides in Cortlandt Manor, NY, was charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a class “A” misdemeanor, and Harassment in the Second Degree, a violation, after he allegedly struck the eleven-year-old student in the face and then threatened to knock him out.

On January 11, 2018, school officials became aware of the incident that had allegedly occurred that day between the bus monitor and the student. School officials promptly notified the School Resource Officer, Deputy Ryan McMahon, who immediately responded to the Putnam Valley Middle School.

When Deputy McMahon arrived at the school at approximately 3:30 p.m., school administrators informed him that a student had been allegedly struck by a bus monitor while on the school bus. The school bus is owned and operated by the Montauk Bus Company.

Deputy McMahon immediately began an investigation into the allegation. After interviewing several witnesses and reviewing video and audio footage supplied by the bus company, the deputy arrested the school bus monitor, Joseph Masi.

Mr. Masi was arraigned on both charges on January 12, 2018, by the Honorable Justice Gina C. Capone of the Putnam Valley Justice Court. Mr. Masi was released on his own recognizance, pending a future court date in the Putnam Valley Justice Court.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office thanks the Putnam Valley School District and the Montauk Bus Company for their prompt attention to this matter and for their complete cooperation in the investigation.
