Obituary, Julia ‘Judy’ Virginia Chapman

 

Rhinebeck – Julia ‘Judy’ Virginia Chapman, 101, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on the family farm in Amenia, NY; her parents were Maria Carpenter Culver and Arthur Culver.

Judy grew up in Amenia and graduated from Amenia Schools. She attended New Paltz Normal School and graduated with a lifetime teaching certificate. Her first teaching position was in a one room schoolhouse where she taught several grades. She moved the Red Hook School system where she mostly taught first grade for 20 years until her retirement in 1981.

On January 1, 1942, she married Stuart K. Chapman. Together they owned and operated a dairy farm in Sharon, Ct. They relocated to Stanfordville in 1952 and then to Rhinebeck in 1958.

She was an active member of the Rhinebeck Reformed Church, the church Dorcas Guild; the Braille group at the Lutheran Church, the Northern Dutchess Hospital Auxiliary, her knitting group and her special Rummikub get-togethers.

She is survived by her daughter Pam Hoffman and her son-in-law Roger Hoffman; daughter-in-law Susan Chapman; grandchildren, Rebecca (Jamie) Tucker, John (Allyson) Traver, Stephen (Alexis) Hoffman, Christopher (Zsanne) Hoffman, Richard ( Angie) Chapman, Jennifer (Brian) Herget, Kimbrie (Zachary) Cullen, James (Pam) Chapman, Christopher Chapman and Thomas Chapman: five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband Stuart K. Chapman in 1984; her son Richard K. Chapman in 2017; and her two brothers Morgan and Bartlet Culver.

Calling hours Monday, January 22, 2018, 5:00 to 8:00 PM, at 51 W. Market St. Rhinebeck.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, 11 AM, at the Reformed Church of Rhinebeck, 6368 Mill St., Rhinebeck. Interment will be in the Rhinebeck Cemetery
