Obituary, Barbara Learning (nee Daley)

Barbara Learning (nee Daley), 79, longtime South Beach resident, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2018, at her daughter’s home in Dutchess County, N.Y.

Born and raised in Westerleigh, Staten Island, Mrs. Learning moved to South Beach when she married her beloved husband, Albert Learning, who passed away in 1997. She relocated to Poughquag, N.Y., to live with her daughter, Cathleen, five years ago.

After graduating Port Richmond High School, Mrs. Learning began working with the Telephone Company. She retired to dedicate her time to raising her children. Years later she became a group leader for the Campfire Girls on Staten Island. Her caring and supportive nature made her a mentor and “den mother” for the young girls in the club, as well as her family friend’s three daughters whom she babysat for many years.

As a teenager, Mrs. Learning enjoyed horseback riding and belonged to the 4H Club, riding mostly at the former Clove Lake Stables. She also loved knitting and crocheting, creating beautiful sweaters and scarves for her family. Mrs. Learning was an avid reader who enjoyed mystery novels.

“Mom was a selfless, simple woman,” said her children. ” She proudly shared in the accomplishments of her beloved grandchildren and looked forward to family gatherings.”

After moving Upstate to be with her daughter and her family, she quickly became an active member of her new community. She truly loved meeting new friends and attending bingo parties and neighborhood barbecues. Mrs. Learning left a positive and lasting impression on all those she met and will be truly missed by everyone.

Mrs. Learning was the beloved wife of the late Albert; loving mother of Edward Learning and his wife, Victoria, and Cathleen Grzeczka and her husband, Kevin. She was the adored grandmother of Christopher, Erica, Zachary and Lauren. She is also survived by her dear brother, Ronald Daley and his wife, Gloria, and four nieces.
