Beacon man arrested for felony drug possession

On December 27, 2017, the New York State Police from the Wappinger barracks arrested Darren Atkins, age 56, of Beacon, New York, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Fifth Degree, a class D felony, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, a class A misdemeanor, and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, a violation.

On December 27, 2017, at approximately 12:00 p.m., Troopers stopped a vehicle for speeding on Interstate-84 in the Town of Fishkill. A State Police narcotics detection canine alerted to the vehicle, and a search yielded marijuana and crack-cocaine. The driver Darren Atkins also showed signs of drug impairment.

Atkins was arraigned at the town of Fishkill Court and was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail without bail. Atkins is next scheduled to appear on January 2, 2018, at 9:00 a.m.
