Obituary, William Paul Umscheid

William Paul Umscheid passed away in the early morning of November 18, 2017 at the age of 70.

Born in Danbury, CT on March 14, 1947, he was the son of Kilian and Julia Umscheid who emigrated in the mid 1920’s from Germany and settled in Pawling in the early 1940’s.

Bill grew up in Pawling, attending local schools, graduating in 1965.  He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1969 from Pratt Institute for industrial engineering.  He joined IMB immediately after college, where he focused on the construction of new facilities to accommodate IBM’s expanding micro chip business.  He retired in 2000 and continued to live on the family farm.  He raised cattle and pursed his interests in photography, fishing, and traveling.  He loved to attend sporting events, particularly baseball and football.

Unfortunately, a severe stroke in 2003 left him severely paralyzed to where he had to move to a rehabilitation center.  He remained there for ten years until he passed away.  He was deeply admired and loved by the staff and residents alike for his positive attitude and good cheer.

He is survived by his brother, Rudy, and his wife Anne, his nephew, Matthew, and his wife, Cynthia, his nephew, Chris, and his wife, Mimi, his niece, Kathryn, and her husband Mike Doherty, as well as five grandnieces, Cece, Olive, Hazel, Carmen, and Annika.

William was deeply loved by his family and many friends; his devotion, generosity, and wonderful sense of humor will be sorely missed.

Family and friends may call Saturday, December 9th 8:30 – 9:30 AM at the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM at St. John’s Church, 39 east Main Street, Pawling.  Burial follows in St. John’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Stroke Foundation, 700 Ringling Blvd. #T-710, Sarasota, FL 34236.
