Patterson, NY – In honor of the founding of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, The Enoch Crosby Chapter participated in the Patterson Baptist Church Cemetery Restoration.
The Patterson Baptist Church Cemetery was formerly known as Towner’s Cemetery, also called Four Corners Cemetery, and some years ago was turned over to the Patterson Baptist Church for its care and maintenance. The oldest known headstone is dated 1807.
The cemetery restoration project is spearheaded by Susan Rebentisch, a DAR member and member of the Patterson Baptist Church. The Enoch Crosby Chapter’s Service to America volunteer day was the kick off for a several years project that will include cleaning and restoring headstones, straightening and uprighting fallen ones, cataloguing and updating maps, collating 4 different list sources into one comprehensive list and submitting all to Find-a-Grave. It is unknown the exact number of internments at the cemetery but it is well over 500.
The end goal will be to identify and locate all possible graves, designate burial rows especially in the old section, update maps, locate the 9 Revolutionary War soldiers and identify them with DAR plaques and submit all data to the Patterson Historical Society and the Putnam County Historical Society.
Scouts and students who need community service hours or service organizations are welcome to assist.
The NSDAR is open to all women, ages 18 and older, who have a direct line to a Patriot who served in the American Revolution. Genealogists are available to help those seeking membership with their applications.
