WASSAIC PROJECT GRANT BRINGS LITERACY AND ARTS TO WEBUTUCK

AMENIA, NY, OCTOBER 30, 2017 — Webutuck 4th grade students have a whole new appreciation for art and literacy thanks to a collaboration with the Wassaic Project.  Over three sessions, students read classic children’s literature, created storyboards based on these books, and then participated in collaborative paintings to represent the themes from the stories.  The artwork was then transformed into pages of a calendar, which each student received.

The Education Director at the Wassaic Project Tara Foley and Art Fellow Jelena Vadenjel-Doukas teamed up with Webutuck art teacher Sam Fitzgerald on this endeavor.  The children read three books with environmental themes including White Snail and Whale, Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain, and the Giving Tree.  A $1500 grant from the Webutuck Quest for Excellence Fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation made this project possible.  The Wassaic Project provided an additional $500 to cover the costs of printing the calendars.
