North american Vet students experience unique equine event

Three NY Veterinary practices collaborate to Host second annual meeting

Ravena, NY, September 9, 2017– Forty-three second and third year veterinary students from Cornell University, Tufts University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Guelph – Ontario Veterinary College, and Universite de Montreal attended the second annual weekend event at The Equine Clinic at OakenCroft and Rhinebeck Equine.  These two practices, along with Millbrook Equine, combined to give veterinary students the opportunity to tour equine clinics, participate in wet-labs and learn about externships and internships.  Following the educational activities, prospective equine practitioners traveled to HITS, where they attended the Million Dollar Grand Prix.

“As a repeat attendee, I can safely say that this is my favorite equine educational event! As a student, we get lectures all year long. This student education meeting provides amazing hands-on wet labs in all aspects of equine medicine that truly make me excited for my future as an equine practitioner!”  -Tufts University Class of 2019

The event was sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim, Cuattro, Henry Schein, Luitpold Animal Health, Merck Animal Health, MWI Animal Health, NEVSCO, SonoSite, VetsFirstChoice, and Zoetis.

“The students that attended our 2nd annual collaborative education event demonstrated that the future of equine medicine is in very good hands.  They were highly engaged, enthusiastic and showed a true passion for the horse.  The attendees had a chance to interact with their peers from other schools and develop the relationships that will help guide their futures.”-Dr. Ryan Penno, Partner at Equine Clinic of OakenCroft

Often, veterinary students are drawn to small animal veterinary practice and don’t fully recognize the opportunities available in equine.  The three veterinary practices identified students’ need for help in determining next career steps.  The goal for the event was to provide an in-depth and hands-on learning experience for the students so that they would better understand the paths available to them.
