Obituary, Samuel Gorkofsky

Samuel Gorkofsky, age 92, of Amenia Road, died unexpectedly on July 18, 2017 at his home. He was the loving husband of Estelle Gorkofsky (née Gurfein). He was buried at King David Memorial Gardens in Putnam Valley, NY on July 20, 2017.

Sam was born November 23, 1924 in Sharon, the son of the late Louis and Bertha (née Paley) Gorkofsky. Raised in Ellsworth, Sam attended a one-room schoolhouse, before attending Sharon Center School, and then Housatonic Valley Regional High School, as a member of its first graduating class. Sam and his father, Louis, bought Long Meadow Farm in Sharon, where Sam would operate the farm as a dairy farm.

Sam married his wife of almost 59 years, Estelle in October of 1958. Soon thereafter they welcomed into the world a daughter, Terri and son, Kevin. With the help of Estelle, Sam was able to build a successful dairy farm which held over 180 head of cattle. In 1997 Estelle had a major stroke leaving her in need of full-time care, and for the last 20 years of his life Sam provided that care, helping her take every step.

When Sam died last Tuesday, he died in the house that he built and so loved, on the farm and land that he so loved, and in the town of Sharon that he so loved. As much as Sam loved his farm life, his true joy and pride came from his family. Sam is lovingly survived by his wife, Estelle, daughter, Terri Kravitz and her husband Steve of New York, NY, son, Kevin and his wife Judy of Simsbury, CT, his six grandchildren, Joshua and Adam Kravitz and Andrea, Victoria, Luke and Sara Gorkofsky as well as his nieces and nephews, Marvin, Carol, Joyce and Jeffrey. He was predeceased by his sisters Dora Wolman and Lily Schnur.

Memorial contributions in Sam’s memory may be made to the Sharon Fire Department and Ambulance Squad, P.O. Box 357, Sharon, CT   06069 or to Congregation Beth David, P.O. Box 125, 3344 East Main Street, Amenia, NY 12501.
