LET JUSTICE GROW has raised almost $750,000 thus far

WHITE PLAINS, NY-  Founded in 1967, Legal Services of the Hudson Valley (LSHV) is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017. In light of this milestone, the organization launched their Let Justice Grow $1 million campaign to benefit the agency’s efforts to prevent homelessness across the Hudson Valley. LSHV serves the most vulnerable community members in seven counties of the lower and mid-Hudson Valley (Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Orange, Ulster and Sullivan) in providing free, high-quality, comprehensive civil legal services to protect basic human rights and necessities.

In just 6 months, LSHV has raised almost $750,000 directly towards homelessness prevention, including major contributions from:

  • Boies Schiller Flexner LLP
  • DelBello Donnellan Weingarten Wise & Wiederkehr LLP
  • The Dyson Foundation
  • Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler LLP
  • PepsiCo Americas Beverages
  • Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP
  • As well as several individuals wishing to remain anonymous

Agency-wide, almost 44% of LSHV’s cases focus on homelessness prevention by providing legal advice and counsel and brief or extended representation to homeowners in foreclosure and tax proceedings as well as tenants in unwarranted eviction cases.  Tom Gabriel, LSHV’s Chief Development Officer said, “Homelessness threatens the stability of families at the poverty level and imposes enormous costs on communities in the form of providing shelter, increased social services, and other acute services.  Children that are evicted and uprooted typically are set back six months or more in their education, while families that are forced to move often lose important employment opportunities and cannot improve their income or prospects for the future.” LSHV also handles legal matters relating to family law, domestic violence, elder law, disability law, healthcare advocacy, consumer protection, and more.

With a goal of raising $1 million by December 31, 2017, the 50th anniversary Let Justice Grow Campaign will directly impact the work of LSHV staff attorneys and paralegals who handled more than 6,000 housing cases impacting more than 13,000 family members in 2016.  “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of individuals and businesses in the community who have stepped-up to support our efforts to provide a helping hand to our neighbors in need during times of tragedy and other life-threatening circumstances,” said Gabriel.

About Legal Services of the Hudson Valley

The mission of LSHV is to provide free, high-quality counsel in civil matters where basic human needs are at stake for poor and low-income individuals and families who cannot afford an attorney. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to engage as many allies as possible in this effort. LSHV is the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services to all seven counties of the lower Hudson Valley (Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Orange, Ulster and Sullivan).  The work we do each day provides justice to thousands of our neighbors who have nowhere else to turn.  Our funding empowers us to: Protect people from domestic violence; Defend seniors against abuse; Serve veterans on the home front; Support the rights of the disabled; Keep families in their homes.
