Pawling Public Radio (PPR/WPWL) is celebrating its 10th Anniversary presenting lively and interesting information to the Pawling community and surrounding areas. The station currently has 56 contributors, airs 30.5 hours of live programing, and is producing shows ranging from sports, to health, to local businesses and interests. There are also programs in many musical genres, including Jazz, Big Band, Broadway, classic rock, and Indie. With 13 talk shows, listeners can phone in and be part of programs showcasing many topics.
The Station’s annual membership drive has begun. Community members and local businesses can help support the station and its programming by donating $20 for an individual membership, or $30 for a family or business membership. Most recently, the station was the recipient of a grant from the Donaldson Foundation, which has enabled the beginning of construction of a 140-foot tower at the FCC approved site in Wingdale.
“These grant monies couldn’t have come at a better time,” said Bill Bonecutter, chair of Pawling Public Radio. “As a non-profit with no monetary support from local, state, or federal agencies, we depend on grants and donations from the public to keep us on the air.”
The Board of PPR is hoping to see completion of the tower by early fall, at which time area residents will be able to tune in to WPWL at 103.7 FM via their home and car radios, in addition to streaming live via the internet or through TunedinRadio.
Bonecutter also said WPWL is now streaming daily on the innovative MetroNorthStation App developed by New Rochelle partners, Ed Smith and Rick DuFort. The two have identified a niche market in the attentive audience of daily travelers that commute along the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven train lines.
“There is a significant amount of commuter traffic passing through our local communities daily. The goal of the MetroNorthStation App is to connect commuters with local businesses and expose all of the businesses to commuter traffic that’s going through their towns every day,” Smith said.
Jacque Roche, host of the popular PPR interview program, Jacque’s Giant Hudson Valley Music Show, has been interviewing some interesting musical guests, including Melissa Ethridge, Southside Johnny (founder of The Asbury Jukes), Peter Wolfe of The J. Geils Band, and 60’s pop star Lulu. Jacque is a major force behind promoting the station and its musical events and partnerships.
