Art Exhibit: Mood and Light

Works by Barbara Youngman and Luki O’Connor at Studio Around the Corner

The Cultural Arts Coalition will present paintings and photographic works by Barbara Youngman and Luki O’Connor at the Studio Around the Corner beginning June 30, 2017, at an opening reception from 7 to 9 PM.  The show, entitled “Mood and Light” will be exhibited at the Studio throughout the months of July and August during gallery hours on Saturdays, 12 – 2 PM and during other events at the Studio.

A native New Yorker, Barbara Youngman has been creating works of art her entire life.  Self-taught, she creates paintings in multiple mediums including acrylics, encaustic, fabric, mosaics, and other materials and especially enjoys the freedom that mixed media provides.  She takes her inspiration from dark pensive moods.  “I like to paint about pain, angst, wonder, and grief. I want the viewer to have an emotional connection, which perhaps reminds them of a personal life experience, but I do not paint for the other person.”  Before devoting her focus to painting, Barbara spent most of her creative energy crafting and selling jewelry for her company Jewelscape.

Luki O’Connor’s first camera was a Brownie, which she used to photograph everything in her path, including her many pets and siblings.  She graduated to an instamatic camera — won by sending in a few thousand gum wrappers — and eventually to a 35 mm camera, for which she set up a darkroom and learned to process her black and white film to make her own prints. Her first job in NYC was shooting ads using 4×5 and 8×10 cameras.  After some time as a photographer in the advertising field, she began to explore shooting in natural light, capturing pets, family friends, landscapes, seascapes, street scenes. It became her passion: “It was a great escape for me, taking off for an entire day with a ton of film, one or two cameras and nothing but time to shoot whatever I wanted.”  Luki later went on to work as both a staff and freelance photographer, but she continues with her passion, and adding digital photography to her explorations.

About The Town of Southeast Cultural Arts Coalition

The Town of Southeast Cultural Arts Coalition is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating and sustaining cultural arts within the Town of Southeast and its surrounding region. TOSCAC was established as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation in August 2010 with the purpose, as detailed in the incorporation papers, “… to promote and raise funds for the development and effective management of affordable, accessible performance space that will provide citizens of the Town of Southeast opportunities to participate in and appreciate cultural arts, including lectures, theater, dance, film, music, visual arts, and inclusive community events.”

Our current focus is the renovation of the Southeast Old Town Hall, a historic landmark within the Village of Brewster and a perfect venue to serve as a cultural hub. The Old Town Hall has been described as a “Jewel in the Center of Brewster” and its renovation will help foster the revitalization of downtown Brewster.
