Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith has been honored by The Detective Barney Ferguson Emerald Legacy Fund for his careers in the military and in law enforcement.

The Sheriff was feted by the organization on June 1st in New Rochelle, at its annual fundraising banquet to benefit police, firefighting and military personnel and their families who have experienced injuries, illnesses or deaths. The Legacy Fund carries out its benevolent work in the memory of deceased New York City Police Detective Barney Ferguson, who for many years was a leader in many police and civic societies in New York City and the Lower Hudson Valley.

Sheriff Smith received an award plaque during the ceremony, citing his combined 48 years of service in the military and as Sheriff. The banquet and award ceremony, held at Juliano’s Restaurant in New Rochelle, was attended by police and firefighters from throughout the region, including several members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. The New York City Fire Department Pipes and Drums Band and the Golding Academy Champion Irish Dancers provided entertainment for the guests.
