Dutchess County Historic Tavern Trail

Poughkeepsie, NY… The Dutchess County Historic Tavern Trail , in its second year, brings history and local cuisine together, while introducing the community to iconic locales. Each installment of the program is held at a different historic location, and includes a brief presentation of the site’s history.

The Tavern Trail is a collaborative endeavor between the Dutchess County Department of History, the Dutchess County Historical Society, and local historical societies to create an innovative program that highlights the county’s rich history.

County Historian William P. Tatum III said, “The Dutchess County Historic Tavern Trail highlights many of our iconic buildings and the history contained in our epic landscape. These programs are a fun way to explore the links between history, cuisine, and local culture that make our area such a vibrant place.”

The North East Historical Society will host the upcoming tavern trail event at the Millerton Inn in Millerton on Friday, June 9th at 6 pm. A one-time booming railroad town filled with hotels, bars, and all manner of entertainment, Millerton was also the scene of numerous incidents during Prohibition, the focus for this year’s program series. Attendees will hear tales of police raids, exploding stills, and oyster bakes gone wrong, in addition to learning about the new walking tour of the nationally-recognized Millerton Historic District. Anyone wishing to stay on for dinner in the elegantly-restored Victorian house will receive 10% off their fare with their tavern trail ticket.

Future installments of the series will visit Charlotte’s Restaurant in Millbrook on July 14th, the Kimlin Cider Mill in Poughkeepsie on August 11th, the Elmendorph Inn in Red Hook on September 8th, and will conclude at Dutch’s Spirits in Pine Plains on October 13th.

The Millerton Inn is located at 53 Main Street, in the village of Millerton, NY. Reservations may be made online at http://www.meetup.com/DutchessTavernTrail. Tickets for each program are $5 per person and include discounts on meals and access to special offerings at host sites.
