Tractor-Trailer Rollover Closes Route 22

DRIVER HOSPITALIZED AFTER CRASH

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that a tractor-trailer truck crashed and rolled over on New York Route 22 this morning (Tuesday), sending the trucker to the hospital and closing the highway to traffic.

The crash occurred around 11:00 a.m. today, when a southbound truck hauling a flatbed loaded with concrete blocks went out of control and ran off the shoulder of Route 22 just south of the intersection with Havilland Hollow Road in Patterson. The truck smashed through a guardrail and overturned down an earthen embankment.

Sheriff’s deputies and emergency medical responders aided the injured truck driver, a male who complained of head and neck pain. He was transported by the Patterson Volunteer Ambulance to Danbury Hospital for evaluation.

The load of concrete blocks was flung from the truck and at least one of the truck fuel tanks was ruptured, spilling diesel fuel onto the ground. Officials from the New York State Department Environmental Conservation responded to the scene to coordinate a cleanup of the diesel fuel spill, which was estimated at about 125 gallons. The work of clearing the crash scene was ongoing and Route 22 remained closed to traffic as of the time this News Release. Update – One lane has been opened on Route 22.
