Golden Living . . . News for Senior Citizens

Todd N. Tancredi, Director

Dutchess County Office for the Aging

MAY IS OLDER AMERICANS MONTH

Each May, the nation celebrates Older Americans Month, saluting older Americans for the contributions they make to our communities and reminding them of the many services available to help them stay healthy and active. This year’s theme is Age Out Loud, aimed at giving aging a voice that reflects what older adults have to say. With more aging Americans becoming tech-savvy, there’s an#AgeOutLoud hashtag to go with this year’s observances.

We in Dutchess County also recognize the outstanding contributions made by older adults by selecting the Senior Citizens of the Year from nominations submitted by the community. Awardees this year are Jane Cole Geisler of Verbank for Female Senior Citizen of the Year, John Thomas of Hyde Park for Male Senior Citizen of the Year, and Carol and Nick Annas of Red Hook as Senior Couple of the Year.  They will all be honored by County Executive Marcus J. Molinaro at the annual Celebration of Aging luncheon on Monday, May 22nd at noonat the Villa Borghese, 70 Widmer Road in Wappingers Falls.

For ticket information, call (845) 486-2555, email bjones@dutchessny.gov, or pick up a copy of the spring issue of “Spotlight on Seniors,” available at libraries countywide and online at https://go.usa.gov/xX5R6 .

Admittance to the Celebration luncheon is $25 per person if paid or postmarked before Friday, April 21, and $40 per person if paid after that date.

NEW RED HOOK COMMUNITY CENTER OPENS

Seniors in the Red Hook/Tivoli area have a new option for activities, education and growth – the Red Hook Community Center at 59 Fisk St., which is holding its grand opening and membership drive this coming Saturday, April 22, from noon to 4 p.m. The Office for the Aging will be at the event. Stop in if you’d like to find out more about the services and supports for which seniors and caregivers may be eligible through the Office for the Aging.

The Community Center also aims to provide services for all Red Hook-area residents, including after-school programs and cultural enrichment. Find out more by calling (845) 758-0077 or visit www.redhookcommunitycenter.org.

ANYBODY HERE NOT AGING?

When last we checked, every last one of us was aging, one day at a time – so when you think of the Office for the Aging, think beyond the seniors who are served. Think of the seniors’ families, all the people of all ages who care for seniors, and those who may find themselves in the position of caring for a senior friend or family member one day. Who benefits from the Office from the Aging? Just look in the mirror. You can find out more by subscribing to the Aging News e-newsletter, which arrives in your inbox every Monday and contains each week’s “Golden Living” column, along with plenty of useful, compelling and entertaining information for seniors, their families, their caregivers and more. To find out more, email bjones@dutchessny.gov or call the Office for the Aging at the number below.

THE ANNUAL TICK BATTLE RESUMES

A month ago we were bouncing back from a blizzard, and then a week ago we were enjoying temperatures in the 80’s. Welcome to another Hudson Valley spring. Trouble is, the “deer” ticks that spread Lyme disease and a host of other ailments are enjoying the warmer weather as well, and are hungry after a long winter. Help reduce your risk of exposure to ticks as you enjoy the outdoors this year by joining the Dutchess County Medical Reserve Corps at a free program on tick-borne diseases on Thursday, April 20th, at 7 p.m., at the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response, 392 Creek Road in Poughkeepsie.

Registration prior to the event is required by contacting MRC Coordinator Joe Ryan at (845) 486-2493 or jryan@dutchessny.gov.

For more information on upcoming trainings, visit www.DutchessNY.gov/MRC.

MILITARY HEALTH FIRST AID COURSE (4/22 and 4/29)

A person you know could be experiencing a mental health or substance use problem.  Learn an action plan to help.  You are more likely to encounter someone in an emotional or mental crisis than someone having a heart attack.  Learn how to help a friend, family member, coworker or neighbor in need with the help of a Military First Aid Course, offered to veterans, family members, caregivers and personnel working with veterans.

Advance registration is required for the two-day course, which takes place on Saturday, April 22 and Saturday, April 29 at the Dutchess County Behavioral and Community Health Training Room, 230 North Rd., Poughkeepsie. RSVP to Wendy Cady at (845) 486-2766or wcady@dutchessny.gov.

Light refreshments will be provided by the Dutchess County Vet-2-Vet Veterans’ Peers Services – http://mhadutchess.org/vet2vet/
