Special Earth Day Lecture at the Cary Institute: Terry Tempest Williams. The Hour of Land: A Personal Topography of America’s National Parks

On Saturday, April 22 celebrate Earth Day with a special lecture from author and scholar Terry Tempest Williams. Williams will showcase her new book, The Hour of Land: A Personal Topography of America’s National Parks.

Inspired by the National Park Service’s centennial celebration, Williams’ newest book is a collection of essays that delve into the history of America’s parks, with a focus on how they have been shaped by politics, activism, and environmental change.

The Hour of Land is one of the best nature books I’ve read in years, filled with seductive prose: Wilderness is an antidote to the war within ourselves; The call of the wild is not what your hear but what you follow. Wilderness is the source of what we can imagine and what we cannot— the taproot of of consciousness.” — Andrea Wulf, The New York Times.

Among Williams’ accolades are The Wilderness Society’s Robert Marshall Award, the Western American Literature Association’s Distinguished Achievement Award, the Wallace Stegner Award, and the David R. Brower Conservation Award.

The event will be held in the Cary Institute auditorium, located at 2801 Sharon Turnpike (Rte. 44) in Millbrook, New York. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Seating is first come first served. Books will be available for purchase by Merritt Bookstore.
