The Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum Marks Its 75th Anniversary!

Get to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum to see a new photographic exhibition, “Images of Internment: The Incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II.” The more than 200 photos include shots by Dorothea Lange and Ansel Adams. Signed by President Roosevelt during World War II, Executive Order 9066 led to the incarceration of 120,000 people of Japanese descent, 80,000 of them American citizens.

The exhibit includes a short film with excerpts from oral history accounts of Japanese Americans describing their experiences. See a video of President Ronald Reagan’s remarks when he signed the 1988 bill providing an official government apology and payment to each survivor covered under the Order.

The FDR Library and Museum is located next to the Pre-registration deadline is April 1st. Canoe and kayak rentals are provided by http://www.mainstreamcanoe.com  Main Stream Canoes, 860-693-6791. The water derby is hosted by the Aquatic Explorers Club.

Stormville Antique Show and Flea Market Opens

Vendors are ready to roll out their wares at our busy flea markets. It’s fun, family friendly atmosphere with acres of merchandise to discover at the Stormville Airport Flea Market. With 600 sellers from eight states, merchandise varies, from locally made foods such as honey, salsa and beef jerky, to Hudson Valley handmade art and crafts, to antiques, collectibles, new merchandise and home décor. Save room to sample the many food concessions.

Shoppers return year after year in pursuit of bargains to six shows, starting April 29 & 30 with “Springtime in the Country” and ending with “Christmas in November, 4th & 5th.” Others are: May 27 & 28, July 1 & 2, September 2 & 3, and October 7 & 8. You’ll have a grand time shopping for bargains, discovering gems and finding distinctive items. Free admission and parking; no pets.

Rhinebeck 2017: Antique Car Show May 5-7

The Hudson River Valley Antique Auto Association presents Rhinebeck 2017! Spectators come from all over the northeast to display their classic cars. Countless hot rods, race cars & customs are on view on Saturday, with 30 awards presented. On Sunday, see 60 classes of impressive antique & classic cars (to 1991). Friday, May 5th from 12 – 5pm is the Swap Meet only. Saturday and Sunday, the show is open from 8am – 5pm. Looking for one of your own? There are many great cars for sale in the Car Corral.

Set your GPS for the Dutchess County Fairgrounds at 6636 Route 9 in Rhinebeck, with loads of free parking. Buy tickets or the 2 or 3 day pass for a great savings!

 

Culinary: Sunset Sensations Wine & Food Events

Each month Locust Grove Estate showcases area chefs, who offer delicious wine pairing and food samplings. Now in its 12th year, Sunset Sensations is inspired by heirloom vegetables from the Locust Grove’s kitchen gardens. Guest chefs rotate creating three treats for you to sample, each paired with wines by area wine merchants. Stroll along the kitchen gardens hearing a narrative from the horticulture staff. 5:30 -7:30 pm each third Thursday, May 11 through December, when the mansion is decorated for Christmas. 2683 South Road in Poughkeepsie.

Arts: Beacon Open Studios 2017

Beacon Open Studios is a weekend-long event where area artists open their studios for self-guided tours on May 13 & 14 throughout Beacon. Artists without permanent studios rent U-Haul trucks to display their works, so there’s a bit of a tailgating feel for some. See the list of participating artists; each is a City of Beacon resident; no ringers! Check out the studios of your choosing to appreciate the talent living and growing in this unique city. Kickoff Party is Friday, May 12th, 6-9 pm at Oak Vino, 389 Main St. Beacon. Studios open from 12 noon- 6 pm each day.
