NYS Assembly Budget Includes Funding For Carbon Farming Tax Credit Study

There is money in the New York State Assembly budget concerning a carbon farming initiative. The Assemblymember behind the effort says she hopes the Senate and governor share her enthusiasm.

Democrat Didi Barrett had sponsored a bill that creates a carbon farming tax credit. She says the Assembly budget includes about $50,000 to launch a study on the subject.

“It’s in the budget for study to get EnCon, the environmental conservation groups, agriculture and markets, and the tax and finance people to come together and figure out…” says Barrett. “The challenge is going to be how do we measure the soil, how do we measure for people who have been doing this for 25 years versus those who are just starting.”

She says it’s important to ensure that everyone is fairly compensated for climate smart practices.
