SENIOR SEMINARS RETURN IN NOVEMBER

            The Dutchess County Office for the Aging’s annual “Senior Seminars” day takes place Thursday, November 3, at New Hackensack Reformed Church at 1580 Route 376, Wappingers Falls. The event has grown quickly in popularity in recent years, to the point where space and parking limitations now require that you register in advance for any seminar you’d like to attend.

Here are the 11 seminars on our 2016 schedule:

 

9:30 a.m.         WILLS, TRUSTS AND FINANCIAL ABUSE – Learn which documents you may need, and how to spot signs of financial elder abuse; presented by John C. Wirth, Jr. Esq.

 

PARKINSON’S DISEASE – This is your chance to learn more about this disease that affects over a million Americans; presented by the Parkinson’s Disease Support Group.

 

AGE DISCRIMINATION – Dutchess County’s Equal Opportunity/Human Rights Officer, Jody Miller, will discuss ways seniors can stop discrimination and ensure their rights.

 

VETERANS SERVICES – What benefits are available to veterans and their families in Dutchess County? Find out from Nelson Rivera, Director of Veterans Services.

 

10:30 a.m.       ASK THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE – Have a question about Dutchess County government?  Here’s your chance to get answers directly from Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro.

 

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE – What we know and don’t know about it and how families and caregivers can cope, with the Hudson Valley chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

 

CHAIR YOGA – Would you like to feel more energetic, more relaxed or more agile?  Learn how Chair Yoga can get you there. Join instructor Toni Farkas for a short introduction and sample class.

 

PAIN MANAGEMENT IN OLDER ADULTS – A discussion of pain treatment options and strategies, with Dr. Seema Rizvi of Wingate Healthcare.

 

11:30 a.m.       ORGANIZING VS. HOARDING – Make your home safer by de-cluttering and learning to recognize signs of hoarding; presented by professional organizer Sheila Delson.

 

MEDICARE TIPS – Open enrollment takes place from October 15 through December 7; learn some Medicare ins and outs from Office for the Aging Information Services Specialist Maggie Kwet.

 

SPOT THE SCAM – New scams targeting seniors pop up seemingly every day, so learn how to spot and prevent them with help from the New York State Division of Consumer Protection.

VIRTUAL DEMENTIA TOUR TUESDAY (10/18)

“Virtual Dementia Tour” sessions will be offered between noon and 5 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday 10/18) at Woodland Pond, 100 Woodland Pond Circle in New Paltz. The 15-minute sessions simulate what it is like to have Alzheimer’s disease and are designed to help caregivers identify and cope with the behaviors and needs of someone with dementia. Preregistration is required by TODAY (Monday). Call 800-272-3900 to make an appointment.

 

CAREGIVER HOW-TOS AND SUPPORT THIS FALL

The Marist Center for Lifetime Studies is offering a “How To Be A Caregiver” program on Monday, October 24th at Wingate at Dutchess, 3 Summit Court, Fishkill.  Linda Lurie, retired case manager, and Rochelle Friedman, clinical social worker will make this presentation.  There is no cost and refreshments will be served. The event will be held at 2:30PM.  For further information call 845-891-3758.

Meanwhile, the 12th annual Dutchess County Caregivers Conference is being held on Friday, November 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Grandview, 175 Rinaldi Boulevard in Poughkeepsie. For information and registration, call 1-800-272-3900.
