Dutchess County Historic Tavern Trail Continues
Next Stop: Stissing House in Pine Plains this Friday
Poughkeepsie, NY… The Dutchess County Historic Tavern Trail series continues this week at the Stissing House, located at 7801 S. Main Street in Pine Plains, on Friday, August 12th, at 6 p.m. The Historic Tavern Trail, in its inaugural year, brings history and local cuisine together, while introducing the community to iconic locales, with each installment held at a different historic location featuring a brief presentation on the site’s history.
Built by Cornelius Elmendorph in 1782, the Stissing House served as a stagecoach inn on the main line connecting Connecticut to the Hudson River. Over time, the building housed successive inns and restaurants, and purportedly served as a brothel at one time. Dutchess County Historian William P. Tatum III will present a program exploring the Stissing House’s history and will draw on the county’s Ancient Documents Collection for insights on tavern life. Attendees will receive a 10% discount on dinner at the Stissing House.

These programs are a fun way to explore the links between history, cuisine, and local culture that make our area such a vibrant place.”
The Tavern Trail is a collaborative endeavor between the Dutchess County Department of History, the Dutchess County Historical Society, and local historical societies to create an innovative program that highlights the county’s rich history.
Future installments of the series will visit Old Drover’s Inn in Dover Plains on September 9th, the Kimlin Cider Mill in Poughkeepsie on October 14th, and Dutch’s Spirits in Pine Plains on October 28th.
