SAVE THE DATE: AUGUST 11 HEALTH FAIR IN DOVER PLAINS

A free Senior Health Fair is taking place on Thursday, August 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church at 83 Mill St., just east of Route 22, in Dover Plains. Members of the community will be able to learn about the health resources available to them through the Eastern Dutchess County Rural Health Network and the HRHCare Community Health facility in Dover Plains. HRHCare now has a mobile health van that will be at this event offering health screenings.  The Mobile Health Center is made possible by a generous grant from ArchCare, the healthcare system of the Archdiocese of New York.

WHERE THERE ISN’T A WILL, THERE’S A WORKSHOP

A free public workshop covering important legal documents like wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and medical directives is being held onThursday, August 18 at MidHudson Regional Hospital’s Sister M. Ann Elizabeth Conference Center in Poughkeepsie (241 North Road), from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Rebecca Blahut, attorney at law at McCabe and Mack LLP, who brings 12-plus years of experience as a practitioner concentrating in elder law and long-term care planning, will present practical tips on each type of document and its importance in planning for the future. Payment sources for long-term care, both at home and in a nursing home, will also be discussed, with an explanation of Medicaid.

Although the presentation is free, space is limited, and seats may be reserved by calling (845)483-5551. The program is funded, in part, by the U.S. Administration on Aging, New York State Office for the Aging and Dutchess County Office for the Aging.

CAN WE TALK?

If you’re looking for a speaker for your group’s next meeting or event, the Office for the Aging has speakers on staff who can present free and stimulating programs. Topics range from Medicare and health insurance, to the services offered by the Office for the Aging, to the popular Successful Aging presentation that guides seniors through the 13 steps they need to think about to maximize their chances of living happily and independently for as long as it is safe to do so. The comprehensive Successful Aging presentation covers everything from socialization and planning, to exercise and nutrition, to scam avoidance and home safety. To find out more, or to book a speaker, call the office at (845) 486-2555 or email Outreach Csoordinator Brian Jones at bjones@dutchessny.gov.

SENIOR PICNIC VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR THIS WEDNESDAY (7/27)
AND BEYOND

The annual Office for the Aging Senior Picnic for city of Poughkeepsie residents is a consistently popular event for city seniors, and many of them will need help getting around at the Waryas Park picnic site this Wednesday (July 27) for what’s expected to be a typical hot late July day. If you can assist with setting up tables and chairs, parking cars, bringing food and drinks to seniors, and taking down chairs and tables when it’s all done, our seniors would love to have you come volunteer your help. Our printable volunteer sign-up form is available athttp://www.co.dutchess.ny.us/CountyGov/Departments/Aging/AGvolunteers.pdf . You can get in touch with outreach coordinator Brian Jones if you have questions, at (845)486-2555 or bjones@dutchessny.gov .

Other picnics on our schedule include the August 3 picnic for Pleasant Valley residents at Cady Field, the August 10 picnic for Town of Poughkeepsie residents at Bowdoin Park, the August 17 picnic for Town of Lagrange residents at Freedom Park, and the 2016 schedule wraps up with an August 24 picnic for East Fishkill residents at the town recreation park on Route 376. We’d love your help there as well!

LA CLÍNICA VAN RED HOOK VISIT POSTPONED FROM TODAY (7/25) TO AUGUST

HEARINGS THIS WEEK ON 518 AREA CODE CHANGES

Most of Dutchess County’s phone numbers use the 845 area code, but area code 518 extends down into part of northeastern Dutchess – mainly the Pine Plains/Millerton area. Trouble is, 518 is predicted to run out of numbers in early 2019, so the state Department of Public Service is holding hearings this summer on what comes next. The nearest one to Dutchess will be held this week, at Ichabod Crane High School (2910 Route 9) in the Columbia County community of Valatie on Thursday, June 28. The music starts at 7:00 p.m. Full summer schedule at https://dutchesstourism.com/events/town-of-fishkill-summer-concert-series-geering-park106521/
