Children of all ages will have many opportunities to take part in the Millbrook Literary Festival set May 21 at the Millbrook Library.

The Young Writers Showcase gives students between the ages of 8-18 the opportunity to enter any written works that they have produced during the current school year. In addition, three informative sessions are set with authors.

Students entering the Showcase can read from their work during presentations from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and all works will be printed in the Young Writers Showcase Booklet.

One entry per student will be allowed in the following categories: ages 8-11, 12-14 and 15-18. Two prizes will be awarded per category.

Each entry must have a title and be limited to 500 words or less. It must include student’s name, age/grade and school (if applicable) and telephone number.

Students may write on a subject of their choice. Entries can be something already written or a piece written especially for the Showcase.

Writings can include composition, essay, prose or poetry, fact or fiction. All entries must be typed and submitted electronically to Orchmail@aol.com and the deadline for entries is Monday, May 9.

The sessions with authors include:

-How Cool Is That?! Owl Pellet Dissection Workshop, 10-10:45 a.m.

Children are invited to join teacher and author Velya Jancz-Urban as she shares her most popular hands-on science class for kids. As their natural curiosity leads them to explore the natural world, each child will come away with something different from dissecting an owl pellet, from an understanding of the food chain and circle-of-life concept, to mammal anatomy.

-Spring Into Science and Nature, 10:45-11:45 a.m.

Acclaimed children’s authors Jordan D. Brown (Science Stunts: Fun Feats of Physics), Nancy Castaldo (Seeds), and Nancy Furstinger (Paws of Courage) will spark an interest in your children in the plants and animals of the Hudson Valley and beyond, while opening their eyes to the interdependence among all living things.

-The Art Of the Picture Book, 1:45-2:45 p.m.

Join masters of the craft Hans Wilhelm (author and illustrator who has sold more than 42 million books worldwide), Steve Metzger (acclaimed author of 70 books), and Hudson Valley authors extraordinaire Karen Orloff (Miles of Smiles) and Lesa Cline-Ransome (Just a Lucky So and So: The Story of Louis Armstrong) in a lively discussion of the importance of picture books in developing higher level reading and thinking skills. Learn how words and illustration combine to create art.

Teen Writing Workshop, 3:00-3:35pm

In a warm and welcoming environment with young adult author Julie Chibbaro, teens will learn the basics of storytelling. Workshop includes craft lessons on setting your scene, how to build a character and a plot, and how to revise your story. Make sure to bring your favorite notebook and pen or pencil!
