One dead in car, truck head-on collision in Millbrook

MILLBROOK >> The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal head-on crash involving a car and a truck on U.S. Route 44 near Bontecou Road.

At about 9 a.m. Saturday, police said a car with three occupants was traveling southwest on Route 44 when it struck a northeast-bound dump truck loaded with gravel.

The driver of the car died at the scene and the passengers, who are both young children, were taken to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie and then flown to Westchester Medical Center.

No information about the truck driver’s condition was available.

Police said a preliminary investigation showed that the car appeared to have crossed over into the truck’s lane of travel before it was struck, according to a press release.

Police said Route 44 between Little Rest and Kennels roads was closed for investigation, and remained closed as of 2 p.m. Saturday.

The names of those involved were withheld pending the notification of family members, police said.

An investigation by members of the Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit is continuing. The Sheriff’s Department detective division was assisted at the scene by the state police and the Millbrook Fire Department.
