SENIOR HOUSING FOCUS OF SEMINARS
The Office for the Aging’s annual morning of Senior Seminars has been scheduled for Thursday, November 5th at the New Hackensack Reformed Church classrooms beginning at 9:30 AM. This year’s seminars will include a three-session series focusing on senior housing. If you are looking to move, downsize, or just want to learn what options there are for seniors looking for housing (including long-term care facilities), you’ll want to save the date for this very popular event. Representatives of senior housing facilities are welcome to attend the seminars and participate in the open forum segments, as well as to answer questions from seniors.
Additional seminar topics will include Wills & Trusts, Tai Chi, Healthy Back, Protect Yourself from Fraud, Exercise Motivation, Qi Gong, Ask the County Executive, Hearing Issues and Parkinson’s Disease. TRANSPORTATION COUNCIL SEEKS INPUT
The Poughkeepsie-Dutchess County Transportation Council (PDCTC) has issued a public survey in support of its new long-range Metropolitan Transportation Plan: Moving Dutchess 2. The 25-year plan, which builds upon 2011’s Moving Dutchess, seeks to identify strategies and recommendations to preserve the existing transportation system and meet future travel demands in Dutchess County. The PDCTC is requesting the public’s input in identifying and prioritizing the county’s transportation needs.
In 2011, the PDCTC issued a survey in support of Moving Dutchess, which fielded more than 450 participants. The survey found that maintaining major roads and improving public transportation were top priorities. Other priorities included improving transportation services for seniors and disabled persons, improving sidewalks, and improving major roads. These results supported subsequent work on road safety assessments, local pedestrian plans, and a transit plan.

ALZHEIMER’S AWARENESS
Did you know Alzheimer’s disease is the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States for those over 65? If you are a woman, you are twice as likely to develop the disease as a man. As Americans live longer (and sometimes unhealthier) lives, their risk for developing Alzheimer’s is ever-increasing. In fact, as Alzheimer’s is the most expensive disease in terms of medical care, many are predicting this will be the disease that bankrupts the Medicare and Medicaid systems. You can help raise funds to fight the disease by forming a team to walk in the Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, September 19th on the Walkway Over the Hudson at 9 AM. Cancer support groups meet at Health Quest facility
